Celebrating 8 years of Masala Mexicana!

Hello again our dear Masalitos! We have missed you so!

You may be wondering - what happened to the Masala Mexicana couple? what have they been up to for the last few years? where did all the recipes go?!?!?!?!

We started out Masala Mexicana while we were both grad students. The budget was limited and the camera was point-and-shoot. Fun times!

2014

Masala Mexicana starts growing exponentially

We started rapidly gathering followers and we were upping our photography/cooking game to keep up. Learned so much that year!

The Masala Mexicana Team grows

IMG_5620.jpg

Early 2015 we found out we were expecting a baby! We were thrilled by the news. That meant putting a pause on Masala Mexicana. Morning sickness kicked in early and I couldn't even think of food, let alone smell it or cook it... but morning sickness is a first trimester issue, right? wrong! I was disgusted by food for 8 loooooooong months. But it was all worth it because by the end of 2015, we welcomed our baby boy Virat and life was perfect!

Year 1 of Parenthood

Sleep deprivation, full time jobs, grueling 2 hour commutes (each way). That's all. No time for creative cooking when all the kitchen time was spent on homemade baby food.

Getting Healthy

IMG_0544.jpg

The day Virat turned 1, I weighed much more than the day he was born. Let that sink in. It was bad. My health had started to take a turn for the worse - I was obese, lethargic, cholesterol sky-rocketing, blood sugar on the rise, all the red flags pointing to a need for action. After careful consideration of all the options, I joined Weight Watchers (This post is not sponsored). It took me 18 months to lose 75 pounds. During that time, I wasn't thinking about new recipes; I was learning about nutrition and forging a new relationship with food, a healthy relationship with long-lasting results.

Which brings us to...

2018

Masala Mexicana Re-launch

IMG_1827.jpg

We're back. This time for good! We have many exciting recipes lined up, we've given the site a new look and made it more user-friendly. We've learned so much about food and nutrition and parenthood and we're thrilled to share it with you all.

Look out for our re-launch this September! We'll be posting a new recipe every 2 weeks. You'll notice that, for the most part, the upcoming recipes will be focused on wholesome, nutrient-rich foods. There will be some indulgent recipes every now and then, because balance is everything.

So, here we are. Eight years of Masala Mexicana. Thank y'all for sticking with us for so long and we look forward to hearing from you. Please leave your comments.
